Make a meaningful impact in the lives of people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds by leading culturally responsive mental health care across the Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS). This senior role offers the opportunity to shape service delivery, build workforce capability, and strengthen partnerships that improve access and outcomes for CALD consumers and their families.

About the Opportunity

The Multicultural Mental Health Coordinator provides high‑level clinical services, leadership, and consultation within a dedicated consultation–liaison model. As part of the Mental Health Resource Team, you will support clinicians across the Townsville Mental Health Service Group to deliver culturally safe, evidence‑based care for consumers experiencing mental illness and/or problematic substance use.

This is a senior allied health position suited to an experienced social worker with strong cross‑cultural capability, advanced clinical decision‑making skills, and a passion for equitable mental health care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate culturally responsive mental health and AOD care for CALD consumers and their families, aligned with national mental health standards and multicultural frameworks.
  • Deliver high‑level clinical services including assessment, care planning, psychoeducation, group programs, and brief interventions.
  • Apply advanced cross‑cultural communication skills, including effective collaboration with interpreters, bicultural workers, and cultural support staff.
  • Provide specialist consultation, advice, and support to clinicians and managers to enhance culturally appropriate practice across THHS.
  • Develop strategies that improve equitable access to mental health services for CALD communities and promote consumer and carer participation in service planning.
  • Lead and contribute to training and education initiatives that build multicultural capability across the workforce.
  • Establish and maintain strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to support integrated, accessible care.
  • Collaborate with multicultural mental health roles across Queensland to support statewide excellence in CALD service delivery.
  • Participate in supervision, provide professional supervision to colleagues and students, and contribute to quality improvement and research activities.

What You’ll Bring

  • Senior-level clinical expertise as a social worker.
  • Strong understanding of multicultural frameworks and culturally responsive practice.
  • High-level communication, consultation, and liaison skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously within a senior scope of practice and contribute meaningfully to multidisciplinary care.
  • Commitment to improving access, equity, and outcomes for CALD consumers.

 What’s On Offer

  • 12.75% employer superannuation contribution and 17.5% recreational leave loading.
  • Generous leave entitlements and salary packaging options to boost take-home pay.
  • Professional development allowance and leave, plus flexible working arrangements.
  • Supportive team culture with opportunities for career growth.
  • Additional benefits available.

What You’ll Need

  • A tertiary degree (or equivalent) qualification in Social Work.
  • Eligibility for full membership to AASW.
  • While not mandatory, status as an AASW accredited Mental Health Social Worker would be highly regarded.
