Join a supportive, multidisciplinary team at one of North Queensland’s major tertiary hospitals. The Social Work Department at Townsville University Hospital is seeking an experienced Senior Social Worker to deliver high level clinical care within the Acute Stroke Unit and associated areas.
About the role
In this senior position, you will provide advanced Social Work services to stroke patients, families and carers, contributing to improved psychosocial outcomes across the acute care journey. You’ll work closely with a dynamic multidisciplinary team, offer specialist clinical advice, and play a key role in service development and quality improvement. This is a great opportunity for a clinician who enjoys autonomy, teamwork and meaningful patient contact.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver high level, evidence based Social Work services within the Acute Stroke Unit.
- Assess and support patients with complex psychosocial needs.
- Provide specialist input within multi-disciplinary teams.
- Offer clinical supervision to Social Work staff and students.
- Contribute to education, service improvement and departmental initiatives.
- Participate in supervision, team meetings and data reporting requirements.
- Exercise independent clinical decision making to support complex multidisciplinary care.

What We’re Looking For
- Strong clinical knowledge and experience in health Social Work, ideally with stroke or acute care — or transferable skills with the ability to learn quickly.
- Ability to provide specialist advice and build effective relationships with patients, families and colleagues.
- Experience supervising staff or students and contributing to professional development.
- Commitment to quality improvement and collaborative practice.
What You’ll Need
- Tertiary qualification in Social Work (or equivalent) and eligibility for AASW membership.
- Ability to participate in rostered rotations, on-call duties (30-minute response time), shift work, weekends and public holidays.
