Facilitator

Job Description

THURSDAY GIRLS GROUP FACILITATOR

JOB DESCRIPTION

PREAMBLE

Thursday Girls is a charity estabished in 2017 by Sue Fisher and Marg Haywood, both experienced social workers, in collaboration with the members of Thursday Girls. The role of the facilitators of the Thursday Girls Group (TG) is to provide support to women living and dying with metastatic breast cancer, taking into account their psychosocial, spiritual, emotional and relevant information needs. This is achieved through two weekly therapeutic support groups and a fortnightly group for the partners of the women. Support for both cohorts is through the therapeutic group experience, and the facilitation of close connections between the members. Each group is facilitated jointly by two facilitators.

All groups are unstructured. Topics discussed depend on the issues important to the members at the time.  The facilitators use their professional skills and knowledge to guide and support members of both groups as needed, within the groups and over the time between groups.

Outside the groups, there is much interaction among members and between members and facilitators. Facilitators are involved in decision making in the Committee that manages the organization. Thursday Girls uses a bottom-up approach to decision making and implementing change. This means that all members are encouraged to give feedback and there is transparency. The Committee, consisting of two facilitators and at least three TG members, makes the final decision. This process is regarded as part of the therapeutic change process. This is why we see Thursday Girls as a therapeutic organizaton.
